Hurricane Lamps Overview

Hurricane lamps are a special type of lighting because they were originally designed not only to provide light but also to stay lit in extreme weather conditions. Originally, the hurricane lamp was an oil lamp with a glass chimney that protected the light from drafts and wind. However, new designs and colors have placed numerous styles under the umbrella term “hurricane lamp.” One basic feature remains – the light, even though it is an electric bulb, is still protected by a glass enclosure of some kind. Full Spectrum Lighting Overview

Dr. John Nash Ott pioneered the effect of natural sunlight to be created from artificial light on the human body through full spectrum lighting.  Full spectrum lighting was designed by Dr. Ott when he was working with the Walt Disney filming. “The Secrets of Life” was the movie he helped create that led to the design of the fluorescent tube. This tube closely approximated the spectrum of sunlight but without the burning rays, which helped the full spectrum lighting.

Ott Light Overview

Years ago a gentleman by the name of Dr. John Ott developed indoor lighting that mimicked natural sunlight and named the light after himself by calling it an ott light.  When Dr. John Ott realized that the best type of lighting for plants, animals, and humans was the natural sunlight, he then started on developing a special light that would give us these benefits. This light has become quite popular and is widely used.  First used just as reading lights, it eventually started to be used within the home in lamps, ceiling fixtures, and in bathrooms.

Antique Parlor Gone with the Wind Lamp

The Antique Parlor Gone with the Wind Lamps were generally vases or parlor lamps with removable founts, along with a matching painted or embossed decoration on both the shade and lamp base. Many of the most beautiful designed lamps that were extremely elaborate and stylish were the ones used for movie set decorations in the movie, “Gone With the Wind,” which was how they got their name. In actuality, this antique parlor gone with the wind lamp style originated in the Victorian and Art Nouveau periods.
