Outdoor Decorative Lighting to Brighten Things Up

There is nothing like outdoor decorative lighting to set a tone of ambience to a well-tended garden, a house, or a swimming area. There are many different types of outdoor decorative lighting to choose from, and the type of light that you choose depends on its application in for your home.

The most popular method of outdoor decorative lighting, of course, is still and will probably always be Christmas lights. Most houses will have Christmas lights on their houses for at least one month of the year, and some will keep them up year round. In some cases, this can look tacky, but using some of the more modern style of lights, such as icicle lights or even white LED lights, it can add a touch of ambience to your house all winter long. Leaving your lights up outside your house all year long is all right, but if you have the multi-color style you should refrain from turning them on outside of the Christmas season.

The more compatible Christmas lights, however, can add some great touches to the outdoor decorative lighting scheme of your home. Gentle white lights are perfect for adding ambience to a garden party or a pool party at night, adding a soft luminescent glow that everyone will appreciate.

Another great idea for outdoor decorative lighting is using lanterns. Again, there are all types of lantern lighting available. Solar powered tea lamps continue to be popular, offering a soft glow along entry paths and around gardens without using any power from your home. They are not overbearing, fitting nicely between plants and bushes an thus unobtrusive during the day. If they are noticed, they generally still fit in nicely with any gardening pattern.

Other forms of solar lights are gaining in popularity, chief among them figurines of animals holding the solar lamps. This can make for a cute addition to your garden in the day as well as providing some lighting ambience at night. The problem with these figure is that, unlike tea lamps that are meant to be bought en masse and arranged as such, too many of these small statues can make a garden look tacky and overbearing. They are best place where they are out of sight of each other.

A beautiful and unique addition to outdoor lighting is the use of Chinese-style paper lanterns. Paper lanterns are perfect for anyone who likes to attempt crafts, as they are incredibly easy to make and an inexpensive project. The beauty of these decorations is in their fragility, however, so they are not always ideal in areas that are windy or other types of weather.

There are lots of available styles of outdoor decorative lighting for any decorating scheme. Outdoor decorative lighting ideas are generally inexpensive, but you will want to watch your overall energy costs- this is where the price starts to add up. Look into lighting styles that operate on more energy efficient technology, such as LED and solar power.
