Under Cabinet Lighting: Task Lighting at its Best

Under cabinet lighting is by far the best way to illuminate that dark space beneath your countertop and expand the usability of your kitchen without a costly makeover. If you are having trouble even determining the color of your countertops and find yourself squinting far too much in the kitchen, then turn to under cabinet light fixtures to shed some literal light on your problem. The space underneath a cabinet is rarely well used mainly due to the lack of light it receives. Instead of avoiding this usable space, turn to under cabinet lighting to make your kitchen well lit and functional.

There are several different types of under cabinet lighting available, but there are two main groups: wired lights and plug-in lights. Depending on the depth of your installation project and your overall budget, one type or the other type of this lighting will best serve your purposes. For new kitchen building projects or kitchen remodeling projects, the best type of under cabinet light fixtures are generally those that are wired into your home’s electrical system and turn off and on via a light switch like any other type of light. However, if you are looking a less permanent solution to lighting or do not want to involve an electrician, then turn to the types of under cabinet lighting plug directly into an electric outlet and switch on and off like a lamp.

There are three main types of light bulbs that are used in under cabinet lighting: halogen bulbs, fluorescent bulbs, and xenon bulbs. The type of light bulb you choose should depend on your wants, needs, and budget. By far, the most energy efficient type of light bulb on the market today is the fluorescent bulb. However, these light bulbs do not produce the most realistic light and are often avoided for this purpose. Halogen bulbs produce fantastically realistic light, but are expensive and burn at extremely hot temperatures. Xenon bulbs are often used for under cabinet lighting, as they are not as hot as halogen bulbs, but do burn out more quickly and require frequent replacements.

Whatever type of under cabinet lighting you choose for your kitchen, you should be sure to take your needs and wants into consideration first. You may only need a bit of light under a particular dark cabinet or you may need a whole lot of light under all of your dark cabinets. Whatever your needs, you are sure to find a specific under cabinet light fixture that will accomplish all of your lighting goals. Also, be sure to take your budget into consideration, since some types of under cabinet lighting are markedly more expensive than other types on the market.

Under cabinet lighting is incredibly important in any kitchen, since you can reclaim this unused space and virtually expand the usable area in your kitchen. Furthermore, with proper lighting, you can see the tasks that you are completing and are at a reduced risk of injury from errant knives. Finally, under cabinet lighting is a great way to add design and drama to your room.
