At some point in our childhood we turned to the comfort of our night light after waking from a nightmare. Maybe that light you used at night was simply a little lamp turned on in the corner of the room, or the light that filtered under the doorway from the light that was left on in the hallway or bathroom. Then as we grew older the night light no longer became a comfort but an aid during the night when waking to use the bathroom, or when we head to the kitchen for a late night snack. Whatever purpose the night light served, it has always been a helpful and comforting aid.
If you browse through a lighting store, or on-line, you will easily find a wide selection for your choice of a night light. It used to be that the only selection you had was plain white with a tiny bulb. Now, the selection seems endless - from a turtle whose shell lights up, a cartoon character design or just a simple plain cover. It all depends on your taste and how much you are willing to spend. If you have no limit on the cost, one possibility is having a row of small inconspicuous lights installed in your home along the edges of your flooring in areas such as your hallway, kitchen, or living room. This will enable you to see exactly where you are going in the middle of the night without purchasing any bulky, unsightly, plug-in lights. If you are just purchasing a small light for your child’s room then no matter what your choice, it will be, without a doubt, an inexpensive yet very effective purchase. At one point the only choice of a night light was one that you would plug in and it would remain on with no option to switch it off, unless you unplugged it. Now there are lights available that come with an on/off switch, clap-on and clap-off option, or a touch-on and touch-off light. If you are a forgetful person and will probably never remember to turn off the light, then an automatic light may be the perfect choice. It is an energy saving light that automatically turns on and off all on its own. It remains plugged in at all times, and at dusk the light will turn on and then at dawn the light will turn off. Or there is the option of having a light with a timer. These energy efficient lights may save you some money and you won’t feel quite so guilty having a night light in your home. Another way to save energy is by ensuring that the lights that are purchased have low voltage bulbs, and when you replace any burn bulbs, that they are replaced with a bulb that has the same, if not less, wattage as the previous one. |
