Modern Lighting

Modern Lighting Buying Tips

Perhaps the first question to ask when considering how to light a room is the best type of light or lamp for this setting – traditional or modern lighting. Keep in mind that there are many excellent alternatives to the standard fluorescent light or the glare of a clear, white bulb. The correct kind of light can enhance furniture color, wood grain, fabric colors, and even the skin tone of the people in the room.

Some companies aim for the best combination of form and function when describing modern lighting. As opposed to the simple function of a bulb, and whatever shade is handy, modern lighting is about how things look. In other words, modern lighting is about the appearance of the fixture itself, as well as the appearance of the people and furniture in the room.

As you consider the style of the lamp, wall light or ceiling light, remember there are many, many choices. For instance, shapes available in the modern lighting category are quite varied. In this case, you would find floor lamps with metal pedestals to hanging lamps that use clear outer screens and inner, colored glass to soften the feel of the room.

If you were looking for the right kind of light for the vanity mirror in your bathroom, some companies offer wall fixtures that feature thick, frosted glass that helps you get the natural light you need for this purpose. You may even want to combine the best of both worlds, with brushed metal bases and fluted glass shades that seem very traditional. Remember, the overall appearance is much different than the older style of bathroom/vanity light because of the type of glass and bulb used.

Modern lighting is also about shape. For instance, some of the most popular modern lighting fixtures and lamps still use ceramic as the basic material, but with ovals, circles and squares mixed into the structure. There are modern lighting fixtures of stainless steel that, because of the new designs available, are not cold and lifeless. In fact, they add some zest to the room because of the sweeps and bends used by designers.

Some basic fixtures on the modern lighting list are available for less than $100, making it quite affordable. For extensive designs, companies also offer pendant lamps with hand-shaped globes. Sconces and pendant lamps also use real wood veneer with modern design to deliver remarkable ambience to the room. These modern lights come with a slightly higher price, usually in the $250 to $400 range (because they are both lighting and sculpture).  No matter what type of modern lighting you choose, the styles and technology available today are a long way from the traditional table lamp.
