Disco Lights

Disco Lights are Back Again

Disco, and it would seem disco lights as well, died out with the ‘70s. But that’s not necessarily so for those who appreciate that era. As well as the music and the dancing of the ‘70s, there had never been a lighting explosion when it comes to the dance floor as there was with disco. These lights were an experiment in psychedalia, and the popularity of these lights continues to this day, in the original vivid colors of the first disco lights and also in more toned down approaches on the disco theme. Dance floors, theme parks, and bowling arenas continue to use disco lights as décor, and they can even be a great addition to a kid’s or teen’s room to add a flash of originality, although you will not want to go overboard. Here are some of the top ideas when it comes to disco lighting.

The Mirror Ball: This is the gold standard in disco lighting, although it is not a light at all. Instead, mirror balls reflect light directed at them in varying patterns, creating great effects on floors and walls and adding a free wheeling air. Change up the patterns even further by incorporating several mirror balls in arrangement. If you are decorating a room, there are mini disco balls available as fixtures or as lamp-like features. You could also hang one from the rearview mirror in your car or off of one of the side mirrors

Honeycomb light: The honeycomb light is arranged with several hexagonal openings that can be covered with colored paper (or in this age filled with colored bulbs, LED or otherwise) to make a patterned effect on the walls and floors. Honeycomb lights can be purchased so that the slots are automated to close while others open, giving the light patterns movement.

Mushroom Lights: These beauties will send out light streams in both clockwise and counter clockwise directions, enhancing the flow of light over your surfaces. They are available in many places in sound-activated models, and if you are the humorous type you could incorporate them into a security structure to confuse thieves. A double mushroom light will turn the beans into circles, which again can randomly rotate both clockwise and counter clockwise.

Ball Lamps: These lamps are designed with the idea of the mirror ball in mind, but incorporate the idea of disco lights inside the overall concept. These lamps are common sights now in department stores, and are available in several models. They can stand as one single spherical unit, as a double ball feature, colored, rotating, or white and stationery.

Disco lights will still tend to be used mostly on the dance floor, but with the development of mini disco lights and mirror balls they can also add a great motif to an adventurous decorator’s room.
