Candle Lights: Romance and Ambiance

There are few things more beautiful than rooms illuminated from the many lights of candles. In the past, candles had a more practical use generally because there was no other way to provide light once the sun went down.

Men and women made candles by pouring animal fats into special molds or by using bee’s wax to fashion pillars of usable light. As technology progressed, the practical need for candles has been virtually eliminated, but the design aspect is still firmly in practice. In addition to using these old fashioned lights for their beauty, you can also enjoy their fantastic smells and colors that are sure to appeal to almost all of your senses.

Whenever you choose candle lights to illuminate your home, be sure to take safety into account. Since candles have an open flame, you should only use special containers for the candles to prevent fires from occurring. Also, avoid placing flammable items near the candle’s flame, including paper products that can easily be ignited. Furthermore, never leave a candle burning without proper supervision and avoid sitting candles in places where they can be easily knocked over or in spots where pets or small children can reach the lights.

Candle lights are one of the most romantic ways to softly bathe your room in a wash of light. Instead of a traditional chandelier, consider hanging a candelier in your room that can be filled with candles. In addition to adding to the ambiance of your room, a candelier is an expensive and easy way to avoid the hassles of hiring an electrician and purchasing an electric powered light fixture. The same safety rules should be followed when using lit candles in a candelier and you should take great care in determining the proper height of the fixture to prevent your ceiling or walls from becoming blackened or even scorched from the candles’ lights.

For a more unexpected look, avoid those hot and messy fires in your fireplace, but replace flames with lights from candles. There are even candle holders specifically designed to mimic the look of wood and fit perfectly inside your firebox. You may need to place a screen or other physical barrier between your living space and the candles in your firebox, especially if you have small children or pets who can still become severely burned by the candle lights.

Candle lights are a great way to add instant ambiance to any room. Consider keeping a few on hand to enjoy when the sun sets. Whether you indulge in a romantic dinner for two over candle light or light a scented candle to transform your bathroom into an exclusive spa, candles are still important in the home. Although candles may seem to be a design aspect instead of a practical one, candles are still quite important to have on hand. Be sure to keep a few candles on hand in the event of a power failure or some other emergency that will need you to provide your own lights.
