Holiday Lighting Overview

Everyone has lights, candles, and decorations that are brought out at certain times of the year such as Thanksgiving or Christmas holiday lighting. Each home takes on a special atmosphere when the owner lights and decorates in a certain way. Today, holiday lighting can carry a new and different meaning. In addition to long-used and traditional lights, homeowners have fresh options for making the home inviting and cheerful during the holidays.

It does not have to cost a lot to make a big difference in the appearance and feel of your home during a particular holiday. First, you may want to make some basic decisions about how you will light your home. Will you be lighting outside? Will the lights be in the form of decorations, such as traditional shapes and figures for Halloween, Christmas, or Fourth of July, or would you use basic lighting along the sidewalks, in the shrubbery and around the edges of the home?

Perhaps you will want to add some special lighting inside the home. Several manufacturers offer such standards as “candle” lamps, candelabras and taper candle lights that, when placed strategically, will add to the warmth of the home. A basic brass window candelabra starts at about $30. A taper candle for the wall will cost about half that price. Other companies have dozens of options when it comes to the size and shape of bulbs and light fixtures. You can choose everything from teardrop mini-lights to lighted grape clusters and rope lights in green for St. Patrick’s Day.

One of the major changes taken place in the past few years is the establishment of specialists who will help you plan and install lighting for most major holidays. These companies range from decorating specialists to lighting contractors and most of them will travel a reasonable distance to work with you. These specialists can answer many of the difficult questions that come with designing and installing a special display.

For example, several companies will help design a display or lighting scheme for a holiday, housewarming, or other special occasion. This can include traditional holiday displays and nativity scenes or custom displays that may require some construction and placement by a professional. Some companies offer certain products, for which they have a price list.

Then, you will find other companies that would work with you to plan your holiday lighting then help you choose such items as lighted signposts, wreaths, or plantings. Specialty items from home decorating companies range from just under $100 to $500 or more, depending on the complexity of the item. A little planning and thought will improve your holiday lighting, no matter how large or small the project.
