Glass Block Lights

Glass Block Lights Add a Brilliant Touch

If you have never seen glass block lights, you are in for a real treat. Whether using these lights indoors or outdoors, the results will be stunning. Sometimes, glass block lights are used to enhance a kitchen, bathroom, or entryway of a home whereas at other times, people use them outdoors by a garden pond or with other outdoor landscaping.

Although glass block lights come in a variety of sizes, one of the more common is 8 x 8 x 4-inch size. The block is made using a very thin piece of white fiberglass, which is designed to help diffuse light. Some glass block lights are translucent or opaque, while others have beautiful designs, many times hand painted. For instance, for an outdoor setting, you might find the block light with deer, fish, or a garden scene. Then, when the light is turned on, the design comes to life.

The process for making hand painted glass block lights is quite interesting.  Each block is carefully painted using special glass paint, which is a fine, powdered type of colored paint. The creator mixes this special powder with liquid, which is then painted onto the blocks. After the design is completed on the glass block lights, each is fired in a kiln that heats up to a staggering 1175 degrees. When finished, not only do the glass block lights look incredible, but they also have a finish that will not scratch, chip off, or fade when in sunlight.

Now, once the painting and firing phase of the glass block lights is complete, each block has to be drilled, making a special slot where the light bulb would be screwed in. For this, a core bit of one-half inch diameter is used. The process must be done carefully to ensure the hole is not too deep. Then, another hole is drilled for the light, which is on the fiberglass side or opposite the image.

When using glass block lights, most accommodate a 50-watt quartz halogen bulb, which creates a magnificent yet subtle illumination. The assembly portion is made using high quality materials so you never have to worry about fire or overheating. Glass block lights also have a special roof, which helps cut back on glare from the bulb. This portion of the design is made from slate floor tile. The final product you see in the form of glass block lights is a wonderful creation, which would be perfect for your home or possibly as a house-warming gift to someone special.
