Decorative Lighting: Lighting for the Occasion

Think of decorative lighting in icing on the top of a lighting layer cake. Far too often, homeowners focus too much of their time and budget on other types of lighting that they assume to be the most important. These types of lighting include overhead lighting, which is extremely important to provide the first layer of light in the room, but is often mistaken as enough and the lighting purchases end there. By stopping with overhead lighting, you create awkward spots in your room, some of which are too bright and others of which are not bright enough. For this reason, you need secondary types of lighting, including decorative lighting to ensure your room is functional and looks fantastic.

Decorative lighting includes accent lighting and special lighting that is meant to provide a visual focus on some element in your home. This focus can be a upward-facing spotlight on a particular beautiful plant for a dramatic look or a recessed light fixture focused on a particular piece of artwork or architectural element in your home. These light fixtures add drama and interest to your home, but rarely provide any usable light. However, the layers of light in your home situated in other places in the room will ensure that every corner of your room will be properly lit. These decorative elements in this capacity are used for accent and impact.

Other types of decorative lighting include wall sconces, which are literally decorative elements that provide lighting. Wall sconces are a great way to light awkward places, including long hallways and staircases, both of which usually are poorly lit, dark, and dreary. Traditionally, wall sconces are used in bathrooms, situated on either side of a mirror to provide an extra bit of light. If your bathroom is especially small, consider mounting wall sconces directly onto the mirror. Using special hangers with a reflective backing, this method of hanging decorative lighting allows the image and the light to be reflected around the room.

Still another type of decorative lighting is the table lamp. This lamp doubles as task lighting, since it provides light for a specific area that may be poorly lit by the overhead light. Before you choose a specific table lamp, be sure to look at the task you will work towards first. For example, if you plan on reading in a cozy nook, then you will need a lamp that will shed appropriate light on any book and provide soft light. If you plan to be working on a crafting project, then you will need a lamp that will be easily adjustable and feature natural light. Additionally, since a table lamp is a decorative lighting source, you will need to choose a style that will fit into the specific design theme of your room.

Decorative lighting is available in all shapes, sizes, colors, styles, and forms. Choosing appropriate lighting for your home is critical in order to create a polished, complete look. Keep in mind that decorative lighting sources can also double as decorations, so they should look as great as they illuminate.
