Chandelier Size and How to Choose

Some of the finest hotels and restaurants in the world are adorned with one common asset – the chandelier. This light fixture is affixed to the ceiling in which two or more bearing lights are featured. Chandeliers have been a popular choice of lighting for large homes for many years but today, you find them still offering magnificent beauty while being even more ornate. In fact, some chandelier designs are so elaborate that they feature literally dozens of lamps along with incredible glass shapes.

The key with any chandelier is having the space in which to hang it. However, keep in mind that chandeliers come in a number of sizes so even if you have a traditional home, you might find a beautiful chandelier that would fit perfectly. The history of the chandelier goes all the way back to medieval times when abbeys and churches used them to help light oversized halls. Eventually, chandeliers took a different form, looking like that of a wooden cross with spikes on which the candles set.

By the 15th century, the design of the chandelier became quite complex, being built in a crown or ring style. As people fell in love with the chandelier, we began to see them added into large homes. Then in the 18th century, chandeliers changed again, this time to being made from beautiful brass that featured long, curved arms and many glowing candles. Soon, it was discovered that using lead crystal created a stunning scattering of light, which is how the name “Crystal Chandelier” was derived. However, the price of crystal was too much for most people to afford, which is why glass was used in stead.

If you are thinking about adding a gorgeous chandelier to your home, you want to choose the appropriate size, which means better illumination without the actual light fixture being too big or too small.  To help you with the buying process, you can follow a few simple tips.

· Rooms 10 x 20 feet or smaller – Use a 17 to 20-inch chandelier
· Rooms 12 x 12 feet – Use a 26 or 27-inch chandelier
· Rooms 14 x 14 feet – Use a 24 to 36-inch chandelier
· Hang the chandelier 30 inches from the surface of a table when using in a dining room
· Bulbs equaling between 200 and 400 watts should suffice for your new chandelier
